Lake effect snow warning today then near record cold early next week

Winter weather roared into the New Year with plenty of snowfall over the region. Up to 17 inches of snow has fallen from New Year's Day across sections of the Chicago area. The main weather stories over the Chicago area over the next week will be the ongoing heavy lake snow today, followed by a chance for more snow Saturday into Sunday, followed by bitterly cold temperatures Sunday night through Tuesday night.

Heavy lake snow today

Heavy lake effect snow squalls are the main weather threat today. After system snow dumped over a foot of snow across sections of the area, heavy lake snow off of stiff northeast winds developed overnight and will continue this afternoon and evening causing traffic problems. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for counties adjacent to Lake Michigan including Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, and Porter counties. All counties will be cleared from this after 6pm this evening except for Lake and Porter counties in Indiana which will be cleared by midnight. An additional 3-8 inches is possible from this.

Saturday-Sunday snow chance

The next best chance for snow will come Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Models have a weather system developing to the south of the area spreading snow across the region. Areas south of Interstate 80 looks to get the best shot at higher snow totals.

Bitterly cold temperatures Sunday night-Tuesday night

An Arctic high will move over the region late Sunday after the snow moves out. It's an airmass that could bring near record cold. Low temperatures Sunday night through Tuesday night will range from 5 to 15 degrees below zero with wind chill values as low as 30 degrees below zero. High temperatures Monday and Tuesday will not get above zero.
