The Breckenridge Ski Resort has opened Lake Chutes, its expert/technical terrain located above tree-line on Peak 8. Snow cover is still quite thin, however, with plenty of exposed rocks ready to rip out an edge or gouge out a core shot.
Lake Chutes can only be accessed by hiking from the top of the Imperial SuperChair. From the top of the chair, skiers and boarders hike 158 vertical feet to the summit of Peak 8, elevation 12,998 feet above sea level, then traverse skiers' right along the ridgeline where they can descend a variety of steep terrain including technical chutes and cliff bands. Beyond Lake Chutes is the south-facing Snow White terrain which remains closed due to thin snow cover.
Breckenridge now has 89 percent of its terrain or 2,093 acres open. The ski area has received five inches of new snow in the last 48 hours, 16 inches in the last week and 155 total inches this season. The snow-base depth measures a solid 52 inches thick.
Another four to 10 inches of snowfall is expected at Breckenridge through Monday according to the National Weather Service. Snowfall should be heaviest overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
