As long as gaming remains off limits in the Lone Star State, Texans must continue to rely on their neighbor to the east to satisfy those quick and fast gambling needs. Houston hotel and restaurant magnate Tillman Fertitta is doing what he can in the effort. After all, everything he seems to touch turns to gold…nuggets that is.
Construction is underway for Fertitta’s fifth Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino which will be housed in Lake Charles, Louisiana. In all, Fertitta plans to inject over $600 million into the project. Fertitta was able to acquire an already-in-construction property and plans to complete the project and open by summer 2014. The hotel and grounds will include approximately 800 guest rooms, a championship golf course as well as Landry’s restaurant staples Grotto and Vic & Anthony’s. As for gaming, are you feeling lucky? The new 'Nugget will have over sixty tables and over 1500 slot machines.
Judging by the popularity of the other four Golden Nugget locations, Fertitta’s project will be a success. Not only that, but it will give the current Lake Charles gaming residents a run for their money. Family favorite L’Auberge Casino and Resort, the current “luxury” locale, will not only have new competition, but it will need to step up its game to keep up with Fertitta.
Lake Charles is only a 2.5 hour drive from Houston. This relatively short distance is attractive for Texas travelers looking for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Fertitta’s other Golden Nugget locations are in Las Vegas, Biloxi Laughlin, and Atlantic City. The Lake Charles location will add to the recent influx of business projects Fertitta has been a part of along the Gulf Coast. Last summer, Fertitta opened the Pleasure Pier in Galveston, Texas, revitalizing the city and southeast Texas travel and entertainment offerings.
