Only a short drive from Los Angeles, Laguna Beach is a place where one can divest oneself of the stress from the city and spend a relaxing day strolling this seaside town adorned with fabulous art galleries and eateries. The art represents all aspects, style and mediums whether it Plein Air, abstract or modern. Even the galleries have different ambiences. There are the Laguna cottages adjacent to the very contemporary galleries.
The JoANNE Artman Gallery located at 326 North Coast Highway is a very modern conceptual looking gallery with interesting nooks and crannies that enhance the viewers interpretation of the art on view. Currently exhibiting at the gallery are the new works of Los Angeles based artist David Limrite. The exhibit through January 28th features paintings from David Limrite's Siren series, a lyrical yet haunting look at the Mermaid. The Sirens were very prevalent in Greek Mythology and evolved to become the folklore of sailors who were enchanted by them.
“My Creations reflect my interest in the heroic, monumental, solitary figure – alone and at odds or in harmony with themselves and/or the world. I use a static, timeless, iconic figure played against aggressive handling of my materials to create mysterious and intriguing beings. These images suggest individual narratives and exist as energetic, graphic and powerful mixed media artifacts.” – David Limrite
Limrite’s Sirens are represented by half women, half fish portraits, which exemplify the conflicts and need for us to understand and deal with the unknown. Using a dark palette also expresses the feeling of the unknown and the human conflicts that prevail before transformation or a change of a course in one's life. In some of the paintings the use of color seems to represents a forboding nature. Although haunting there is a poignant and lingering beauty to the female figures.
