Lady Tiger basketball headed to the Sweet 16

The LSU Lady Tiger basketball team upset No. 7 West Virginia 76-67 to gain a berth in the 2014 Sweet 16 tournament Tuesday night, March 25, 2014 in Baton Rouge, La.

This will be the Tigers second consecutive trip to the Sweet 16 and one the team fought hard for. Jeanne Kenney, a guard for the Tigers was injured half way through the first half with an injury to her nose and possible concussion that knocked her out of play for the remainder of the game. Later in the game seniors Theresa Plaisance and Shanece McKinney both fouled out of the game.

The Lady Tigers took control of the game early with free throws from Danielle Ballard and jumpers by DaShawn Harden and Jeanne Kenney to take an early lead in the game.

West Virginia pulled ahead 63-56 of the Tigers at the 5:05 mark, the the Tigers took care of business and pulled out the win.

Danielle Ballard led the Tigers with 22 points and 15 rebounds, a personal best. The win put the Tigers at 21-12 for the season and advances the team to the Sweet 16 tournament. This year's trip to the Sweet 16 marks the 14th appearance in the Sweet 16 for the LSU Lady Tigers.

Head coach Nikki Caldwell had this to say about the game, “This was one of the hardest-fought games between two very good teams. A lot of credit to West Virginia for really pushing the envelope and pushing us to our limits.”

LSU will face Louisville on Sunday, Mar. 30 in Louisville, Ky. at 1:30 p.m. The game will be carried on ESPN2. Louisville earned their berth in the tournament by beating Iowa 83-53 to advance to the Sweet 16.
