When you ask the Maize South Lady Maverick basketball teammates about their 11-5 record thus far this season they’ll tell you it starts with their team chemistry. After posting subpar winning records in its first two seasons as a new high school basketball program the turnaround this season has been impressive. In its latest victory Friday, the Lady Mavs rolled over Wichita Collegiate 46-29 behind Lady Mavs sophomore Mariah Suchan’s 20 points.
Maize South started off the 1st quarter going up 7-2. All 7 points scored by Maize South were by Suchan. Going into the 2nd quarter the Lady Mavs started getting more production by its guards as junior Mckenna Poynter got two layups to drop and senior Shelby Lewis got a three to go from the corner. Another 7 points by Suchan in the quarter got the Lady Mavs a 21-17 halftime lead.
The 3rd quarter started off well for Maize South too as seniors Maty McKay and Lewis and sophomores Abbie Homan and Mady Nestor each notched baskets helping build the lead to 33-22 entering the 4th quarter. From there more jumpers from Homan and McKay and several more made free throws between Poynter and Suchan allowed the Lady Mavs to finish strong.
With this 5th win in row for the Lady Mavs it now sets the stage for another rematch with state ranked Wellington and a chance to beat Wellington for a 2nd time on the season. In their last meeting Maize South and Wellington took the game to overtime with the Lady Mavs eking out the win 50-47.
This impressive season for Maize South comes back to its balanced offensive attack(team averaging 44 points a game) led by Suchan’s 14 point season average and Poynter’s 9 point average and Lewis’s 8 point average. The defensive mind set by these Lady Mavs by just giving up a 33 point opponent scoring average is also leading the way to the turnaround.
How far this Lady Mavs team can go this season as it enters the 4A substate competition in the next few weeks will likely come down to if it can continue to get that balanced offensive production and strong defensive pressure.
