Lady Gaga: 'I was bullied as a kid for being fat and ugly'

Lady Gaga is a world-famous pop star now, but as a child, she was teased and bullied for her unusual looks.

Gaga, 24, who was born and raised in New York City, says the "mean girls" at the exclusive private schools she attended as a child made fun of her for her curly hair and big nose.

TEASED AT SCHOOL

"I had a very big nose, very curly brown hair and I was overweight," Gaga tells Romanian Cosmopolitan. "I got made fun of."

Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, has since learned to embrace her unique looks and has emerged as a true style icon.

Unlike other entertainers who claim to dislike the limelight, Gaga loves being famous and having a worldwide platform to express her artistic sides.

"FAME ENERGIZES ME'

"My friends joke that I'm dead until I get on stage," she says. "For some people, fame kills it [your artistic passion] and becomes more important than the music or the performance. But for me, fame is like rocket fuel. The more my fans like what I'm doing, the more I want to give back to them." Lady_Gaga_weight_loss_before_after_picture fat

The once-heavier Gaga, who confessed she starves herself to be thin, admits she has trouble sleeping because of her excess energy.

"My passion is so strong I can't sleep - I haven't slept for three days," she says.

'MY PASSION MAKES ME NUTS'

The singer-songwriter explains: "I'm already crazy. I'm a fearless person. I think it creeps up on you. I don't think it can be stopped."

She adds: If my destiny is to lose my mind because of fame, then that's my destiny. But my passion still means more than anything.”

Gaga, who admitted she once abused drugs in the past, refuses to take medication to calm her nerves.

"I lie in bed and try to pray and breathe," she says. "I have a very overactive mind. I'm the sort of person who'd never take medication to calm myself. It's maddening. But I love what comes out."

    Great story!
I had no idea really she ever had a weight problem due to her "edgy" style, but could tell since she started her fame she looks smaller.

Thats the "norm" it seems, the more famous one gets, the blonder the hair, whiter the teeth and the thinner they get!

She is certainly unique, kind of like the next generation's Madonna. I actually like much of her music which my 14 year old plays a lot of. Thanks for the insight into yet another native New Yorker, like me!
