Lady Gaga fails to top the chart while Rihanna & Britney Spears gag the #1 spot

After a week of “pop suspense”, Lady Gaga’s second single off her new album Born This Way debuts at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The track, which leaked and was put out for digital downloads on Friday, sold a healthy 162,000 downloads placing it at number four on the Digital Songs chart.

Media prognostics had “Judas” selling more than 300,000 downloads over the weekend due to the similar release of first single “Born This Way”. That track sold 448,000 when it was released on a Friday back in February. “BTW” broke the record for best first week sales for a solo, female artist in 2011, which was held by Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me”, which debuted with 411,000 downloads.

Rihanna’s third single off Loud hits the number one spot. “S&M” becomes her tenth number one hit and her first time with three consecutive singles from the same album topping the chart. Katy Perry has logged four consecutive number ones with all four singles off Teenage Dream. Rihanna has logged four consecutive number ones if her summer collaboration with Eminem, “Love The Way You Lie”, is considered.

“S&M” got a boost from the Rih-mix including Britney Spears. The song had been stuck at number two for weeks despite its healthy sales and radio airplay (the song has topped the Radio Airplay chart for three weeks).

The song sold 293,000 downloads including the Britney version, which also becomes Rihanna’s tenth number one on Digital Tracks.

However positive the reception was for “BTW”, “Judas” is off to a slower start. The song is eyeing the number one spot for next week, if sales prevail. Although “S&M” featuring Britney Spears or “ET” featuring Kanye West could snatch the top spot back.
