This morning, Lady Gaga has posted pictures of herself in a gold wheelchair and is at the receiving end of an Internet backlash. At the Daily Mail, readers roundly condemned the fading starlet for trying to glamorize disabilities. Comments on the gay site Towleroad aren't any nicer.
"If I ever did have any respect for her, I just lost any last vestiges of it. Stupid. Just completely, utterly stupid," one reader wrote. Others questioned whether or not the whole hip surgery thing is nothing but a publicity stunt.
People close to the situation have told this column that Lady Gaga did suffer a minor hip injury, but nothing that should lead to a completely cancelled tour or photo ops in wheelchairs. "In reality, I don't even think she needs a wheelchair," one source tells us.
It is believed that Lady Gaga is trying to use her injury to garner sympathy from the public and cover up for less than ideal ticket sales. In fact, Billboard reported that Lady Gaga had to refund 200,000 tickets for 22 shows. That means she sold a little more than 9,000 seats per show. The venues she plays in house 15,000 seats or more.
You can bet that after the criticism of her latest stunt, we will soon see Mother Monster hire a special digital photographer to take pictures of her posing with sick children. This woman will do anything for publicity.
