It took only a few minutes to shock the VMAs' when Lady Gaga opened the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. Mother Monster’s “Applause” performance was a fashion and wig spectacle that included a game of thong-peek-a-boo.
During the VMA preshow, Lady Gaga stated MTV wanted her to top her last VMA performance, and outdo she did. It was a throwback to the television shows of the 1960’s. Lady Gaga arrived at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn dressed all in black: A Morticia Addams' gown, black wig and black sunglasses. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta then opened the VMA’s donned in all white: “The Flying Nun” cover garb with Lady Gaga’s face set around a white box.
As the MTV Video Music Awards’ cameras shot Lady Gaga, her face and dramatic expressions filled the screen. When “Welcome to the Show” concluded, it sounded like boos filled the Barclays Center, until Mother Monster began her latest release, “Applause”.
The onstage performers helped Lady Gaga change wigs and costumes to open the VMAs. A white wig replaced the box, which turned into a yellow bob (set amongst "Applause" face paint) and then finally, a long blonde, Beyoncé-type hairpiece, totaling four wigs for the night, if you don’t include the skullcap and box.
Her costume changes were equally fascinating, with an all black sequined body suit that stood alone and was then supported by a navy jacket. However, the pièce de résistance was Lady Gaga’s seashell thong bikini. And yes, Mother Monster has back. Those were Lady Gaga’s buttocks, revealed on the VMA stage to the entire MTV Video Music Award audience.
