Lady Gaga has just announced a new tour, which is going to make a stop in Los Angeles the second half of 2012. To celebrate, the pop star announced she now has 19 million Twitter followers-—that's 1 million more than the 18 million she announced a couple weeks back.
There seems to be a little problem though. Many people throughout the Internet have discovered what appears to be multiple fake accounts with no activity. Some of the fake account names are AlejandroStefa1, Jdoden, JPalms, monsterlicious35 and a lot of others. This column tracked down almost 60 accounts with no Twitter activity.
Lady Gaga isn't the only person to rely on this desperate marketing measure. Several fake followers have been following Newt Gingrich as well. We're talking about account names such as Viveran345, Newtfan375, Conservative1968, and many others. This column discovered almost 100 fake accounts following Newt.
According to Los Angeles Industry Analyst Paul Mueller, fading stars and politicians hire marketing companies and pay them a lot of money to create false accounts. "There are several social networking firms who can create as many as one million fake followers in a matter of days. It's shocking that the mainstream media hasn't caught up on this tactic."
