The 54th annual Grammy Awards, hosted by LL Cool J, was broadcast on CBS on Sunday, February 12th, 2012. The annual event celebrating the best performances and recordings across all musical genres, took place at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.
Several country music artists were in attendance, including Lady Antebellum, who after having won the award for Record of the Year in 2011, served as presenters to pass the torch this year. As Lady Antebellum took the stage, Charles Kelley spoke first.
Charles Kelly began, "Just one year ago we were honored to find out what it feels like to win the award for Record of the Year, and for the record, it feels pretty damn good."
Hillary Scott agreed, "That's true. After all, this is a Grammy that's gone to such extraordinary records as Hotel California by The Eagles, What's Love Got to Do With It by Tina Turner and Beautiful Day by U2."
Dave Haywood concluded, "That's impressive company, and these are this year's outstanding nominees for Record of the Year..."
Nominees included Adele's Rolling in the Deep, Bon Iver's Holocene, Bruno Mars' Grenade, Mumford & Sons' The Cave and Katy Perry's Firework. The winner for Record of the Year was Adele.
Adele made her way to the stage, hugging Charles Kelley as she arrived. Adele seemed genuinely touched at the support for Rolling in the Deep, as indicated in her acceptance speech.
Adele said," Thank you so much. This is ridiculous, thank you. I want to say thank you to every radio programmer and broadcaster who played Rolling in the Deep. It's because of you that it seemed to just cross over and people just seemed to really really enjoy it. Thank you so much because I know it's not really a pop record. Thank you very much for that, it's totally out of format."
Her seemingly abrupt, "Yeah, thanks," at the end of her speech caused a ripple of laughter in the audience, but nonetheless, her gratitude came through in the preceding statements.
Adele also took home the Grammys for Song of the Year for Rolling in the Deep, Best Pop Solo Performance for Someone Like You, Best Pop Vocal Album for 21 and Album of the Year for 21.
