Located about 30 minutes north of Kansas City, Missouri is an enchanting sweet spot. Smithville, Missouri is a small town situated on the Little Platte River but what you find nestled in the country is a treat. Ladoga Ridge Winery offers local hand crafted Missouri wines and the perfect setting for a picnic.

Ladoga Ridge offers 10 different wines ranging from dry to sweet and everything in between. You can sample a couple or try all of them for $5.00 per person. This includes all of their wines and you get to keep the take home your wine glass.

For the wine drinkers who prefer the dry variety, your options include Galen's Red (named after one of the owners), a Missouri Chambourcin or the Norton, a full bodied red made from the Missouri state grape. Both will pair nicely with a steak dinner.

Sully's White, a blended white and Traminette are both semi-dry whites. Both will pair with chicken or pork dishes. They would also be great for a picnic wine to go along with cheese and crackers.

Ladoga Ridge Winery really shines at making semi-sweet to sweet wines. With flavors like Peach, Blackberry, Strawberry Rhubarb and Chococherry Kiss, you are sure to find one to pair with dessert. Or just have the wine for dessert, it is sweet enough.

If those are too sweet for your palate, try B-Cause. Made from the Catawba grape, part of the proceeds goes to breast cancer research. This is a perfect picnic wine will complement crackers and cheese, chicken salad and even spicier fare. Prefer a semi-sweet red? Try Toad-A-Lope, a blended red. This is best served chilled.

After selecting which wine is best for you, it can be purchased by the glass or bottle. If you choose the bottle and don't finish it before leaving, the friendly staff will re-cork it for you to transport legally. If you wish to stay, the tasting room offers a quiet and cozy atmosphere. If the weather is nice outside, head out to the patio and enjoy the afternoon outdoors.

Ladoga Ridge Winery is open year round, Wednesday through Sunday. Check their website for hours based on the season.
