Two-wheeling women will have a chance to check out the latest in women's specific cycling gear and apparel on Saturday, June 18, during Keswick Cycle Womens Day. The event, which meets at the Manayunk Diner parking lot, runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers riders of all abilities the opportunity to test ride road and mountain bikes from Specialized, Cannondale and Cervélo.
The male-dominated sport offered little in the way of options for women in terms of sizing, color, and specifications. Bikes were designed for male physiques and drive trains catered to their stronger legs. In the past decade, manufacturers have responded to the emerging female market with new frame designs and clothing tailored to women's tastes and fit. Now with compact geometry and drive trains, women are able to find rides better suited to their relative size and strength. Components like saddles and handlebars have also changed in shape and width to accommodate the female anatomy.
Whatever spins your wheels
Despite the development of women-specific cycling products, some women continue to find bike shops daunting. The June 18 Demo Day provides women with an opportunity to meet other cyclists and try out bikes built just for them. Ladies will be able to choose from carbon and aluminum road bikes along with 26" and 29" hard tail and fully suspended mountain bikes.
Participants should bring a helmet, cycling shoes, driver's license and credit card. Keswick will have road and mountain pedals on hand. Experienced riders who have clipless pedals may want to bring their own pedals. Experienced local club riders will lead riders on road or mountain routes after final adjustments to their demo bikes. Trails or tarmac? Whatever spins your wheels!
Raffle, prizes and gifts--oh my!
In addition to rides, there will be a fabulous raffle with goodies from Specialized, Cannondale, Sugoi, Shimano, GU, Serfas, Bell, Clif Bar, CamelBak, Niterider, Hammer, Oakley & more. Raffle proceeds will go to support Gearing Up, a local non-profit that serves women in transition from drug and alcohol addiction, domestic violence, and/or homelessness with the skills, equipment, and guidance to safely ride a bicycle for exercise, transportation, and personal growth. Tickets are $5 a piece or $10 for 3. Learn more about Gearing Up in this promotional video.
Collection bins will be on hand for participants to donate lightly used cycling gear, including shorts, jerseys, shoes, and saddles which will go directly to Gearing Up. Keswick Cycle promises a little gift for all those who donate their gently used items.
