What would eventually become Lacuna Coil was formed in Milan, Italy in 1994 as Sleep of Right by vocalist Andrea Ferro, bassist Marco Coti Zelati, drummer Michaelangelo, and guitarist Raffaele Zagaria. After releasing 2 demos the band would add Claudio Leo on guitar, replace Michaelangelo with Leonaro Forti on drums, add Cristina Scabbia on vocals, and change their name to Ethereal. Shortly after signing with Century Media in 1997, the band discovered that the name Ethereal had already been taken by a Greek band. The band quickly changed its name to Lacuna Coil, which means "empty spiral".
While the band's lineup would change a little over the following years, Lacuna Coil would grow a worldwide following. The band would release 2 EPs, 6 studio albums, a live album, and 2 compilation albums. Lacuna Coil's albums routinely chart in 8-9 different countries, and their 2006 album Karmacode and 2009 album Shallow Life would both hit #1 on the U.S. Independent chart.
Lacuna Coil's latest album, Dark Adrenaline, was released January 23rd of this year and has already charted in 8 countries. The album currently sits at #12 on the U.S. Independent chart, falling from #3 last week.
