You might remember lacing cards from your childhood. Children as young as three or four can learn sewing techniques with lacing cards. A bit of string, scrap of yarn or a shoelace and a piece of hole punched felt or thick paper in different pictures and patterns results in hours of fun. It is a learning experience and physical skills can be had for pennies.
Simple lacing cards have the ability to teach young children skills they will have for a lifetime. This activity aids inĀ hand eye coordination, visiual acuity and fine motor skills. Eye hand coordination benefits handwriting and using scissors. It also strengthens the eye muscles that involve focusing. The small muscles in the hand and fingers are also strengthened and by manipulating the needle and thread prepares pre-schoolers for writing.
This sewing lesson will help in the future for finishing off a knit and crochet garment. Sewing is also used in other needlearts; quilting, needlepoint and dress making for starters.
For advanced work for older children and adults, there are sewing cards similar to needle point. These cards are made from perforated paper. A tutorial for making your own lacing cards for pre-schoolers out of felt from Dyeing to Knit.
Here is an opportunity for your children to make a piece of handspun yarn that they can use with their lacing cards.
