Have you ever heard a group of attorneys discussing a particular issue in a case or sorting out procedural issues? What if you had access to a large network of attorneys, all practicing in the field you happen to be interested in and you could listen in on or participate in their discussions?
As a law student member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, you can do just that. Current members of the Association can join most practice specific sections that LACBA has. Several of these sections have email based forums called listservs. As a member of one of these sections, you are automatically subscribed to that section's listserv, which means you will see emails back and forth between other LACBA attorneys within that practice area.
LACBA listservs are a valuable tool for many attorneys to share advice, get answers to questions and to build business. For law students, becoming a LACBA section member and monitoring these messages is a great way to get a real world look into specific practice areas. For example, are you interested in Family Law? Join the section and see what types of issues come up, learn how referrals are made between attorneys and get involved with the section to learn even more.
If you're going to practice law in California down the road, LACBA section listservs will be a valuable tool for you to talk shop with other attorneys and sort out difficult legal issues from the comfort of your desk. As a law student, using or just monitoring these messages could be a great way to get started early, learn more about your practice area of choice and build relationships with attorneys in the field you're interested in.
To learn more about LACBA listservs, contact LACBA by calling (213) 896-6560.
