New and experienced teachers of adult literacy education have two additional professional development tools at their disposal—the Reflective Teacher's Forum: A Guided Support Group for Adult ESOL Teachers, Series I, and Teaching ESOL to Adults with Limited Literacy (TEALL).
The courses, offered by the Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) Academy in Lower Manhattan, start this fall, and the deadline for each application is Friday, Sep. 27. Marilyn Rymniak is the dean and director of LAC Academy. Send completed applications and questions to her about these or other certificate programs (ALECC, Freirean Institute, GED Prep and TESLA) at firstname.lastname@example.org or 212-803-3322.
The Reflective Teacher’s Forum, Series I, gives ESOL teachers an opportunity to “develop their skills by exploring and reflecting on their teaching practice. Teachers can discuss issues and challenges they are experiencing in the classroom, and receive support and guidance from the moderator and peers.” The course format includes onsite meetings, online peer-to-peer discussions and peer mentoring. There is a $150 fee for the whole series at 52 hours (5 CEUs); a drop-in fee is $50. A second series will run in the spring.
Teaching ESOL to Adults with Limited Literacy (TEALL) is a certificate program that “provides insight into the needs of English language learners who have minimal first language literacy.” The fee for this professional program is $850 for the certificate at 100 hours (10 CEUs); an optional practicum is $250.
TEALL addresses several themes, including the differences between the needs of limited-literacy learners and those of other adult learners; creating engaging activities when adult learners’ skills are minimal; and understanding the research about TEALL best practices. The program includes a four-week observation or teaching reflection as the course progresses. At the end of the program, participants will be able to identify limited-literacy learners’ needs and create evidence-based classroom instruction. An additional 30-hour teaching practicum placement is available for participants who select this option.
