The Labrador Retriever is once again the top dog in Boston, while the iconic bulldog slid out of the top five in the 2012 local rankings from the American Kennel Club.
It’s the second year in a row that the Labrador Retriever claimed the top spot, but it’s being closely followed by several other breeds that have moved up on the list.
Following the Labrador Retriever, the German Shepherd and Golden Retriever tied for second on the list of the top five most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in Boston. The Boxer was fourth and the Yorkshire Terrier was fifth.
In the 2011 rankings, the Labrador Retriever again placed first, followed by the German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier and the Bulldog. The Bulldog fell from fifth to seventh on the list for 2012.
Other breeds also shifted on the local listing, according to AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson.
"The Labrador Retriever remained most popular in Boston, but other breeds are vying for the top spot," said Lisa Peterson. "Moving up the list in 2012 were the Golden Retriever, Boxer and French Bulldog among others.
Several new breeds also made the Boston list in 2012, including the Siberian Husky (seventh) and the Boston Terrier and Poodle (tied for ninth).
Information on the popularity of breeds was gathered from registration information from Boston zip codes.
Boston followed the rest of the nation in putting the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever at the top of the list. The rest of the national list included the Beagle at four and the Bulldog at five
This is the 22nd year in a row that the Labrador Retriever has been in the No. 1 spot in the U.S.
The AKC hosts its AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on Saturday, Feb. 2.
