Audiences put "The Final Destination" back in the box office lead.
The final Summer Movie weekend has audiences returning to "The Final Destination," chopping up a big weekend of A-list starrers, including "All About Steve" and "Gamer." It looks to be a close call as the last Personalities Match-Up of the season unwinds this Labor Day weekend.
The novelty of 3D terror continued to fuel strong audience interest in "The Final Destination," which just barely topped the Friday Night Five for a second weekend. So far, the film is outpacing the performance of "Final Destination 3," the highest grossing entry in the franchise. "TFD" earned $3.58 million with industry estimates projecting an overall weekend total of $14 - $16 million. So far, the horror show has scared up $38.7 million after eight days in release.
As for the weekend's heavily hyped debuting titles, all are separated by a tight margin, indicating a battle for the top spot that remains too close to call. Sandra Bullock's latest comedic proposal, "All About Steve," was edged out ever so slightly with $3.55 million from 2,251 theaters. Expect this race to be close as "Steve" is also projected to earn between $14 - $16 million this weekend. Gerard Butler's ultra-violent action drama "Gamer" (pictured left with Michael C. Hall) earned $3.3 million from 2,502 sites and is expected to post an opening weekend total of $11 - $13 million.
Rounding out the Friday Night Five were Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" with $3 million, raising its overall total to $83.7 million. "District 9" remained in the top group, earning another $1.75 million as it edges closer to the $100 million milestone. So far, the acclaimed sci-fi drama has amassed $96.1 million.
