The Laboratory Theater of Florida has announced that it will be conducting open auditions for its upcoming Summer Season of theatrical productions. Auditions will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, at the Lab Theater rehearsal space at 1788 Fowler Street in the Fort Myers River District.

Actors aged 16+ are sought for the Summer Season. Actors who have not auditioned for the theater before should come prepared with a monologue.

The summer season will open on May 16 with The Second Book of Ruth by area playwright Zalman Velvel. Ruth was produced earlier this season as a staged reading. This charming romantic comedy tells the tale of Ruth, a modern woman who converts to Judaism for her fiancee and the zany but devoted years that follow.

"June's show will be our Children's Camp production of The Tempest by William Shakespeare," states Artistic Director Annette Trossbach. "This abbreviated version of the play will be the culmination of three weeks of study in all aspects of theater, including costume design, lighting design, acting, voice, movement, Shakespeare, dance, and more. Students will learn all skills during morning workshops and then 'major' in an area in the afternoons. Summer camp runs June 2-20. No auditions are necessary to attend the camp."

The July show will be Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays. This night of one-acts features a unique blend of comedy, drama and wry monologue by playwrights Moishe Kaufmann, Paul Rudnick, Wendy MacLeod and others. This mostly funny collection is a sincere look at the recent changes in gay marriage laws. Opens July 11.

Mr. Marmalade will open on August 15 at the Laboratory Theater. Noah Haidle's dramedy features a four year-old girl living with her dysfunctional family but mostly interacting with her creepy imaginary friend, Mr Marmalade. Little Lucy mimics what she sees and hears of adults and tries to make sense of her loneliness until she finally sheds her invisible friend and plays with the little neighbor boy. Poignant and funny, this play will make the audience think about the interior world of its children.

Auditions for the regular season will be announced at the Season Announcement Event at the theater at 7 p.m. on March 9. Regular season auditions will be held on several dates throughout the summer.
