Labor Remembers Martin Luther King

Many people forget that Martin Luther King was in Memphis, Tennessee to support a strike. On Saturday, Jaunary 19, Rev. Al Sharpton joined American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, American Federation of State. County, and Municipal Employees President Lee Saunders and Philadelphia area labor leaders for a rally at Independence Hall as part of the AFL-CIO's annual observance.

The week of January 14 had AFL-CIO President Bloomingdale and Secretary-Treasurer Synyder attending the swearing in of three union-backed row officials; Attorney General Kathleen Kane, Treasurer Rob McCort and Auditor General Eugene DePasquale.

A major task of the Attorney General and Auditor General will be to scrutinize the ongoing plans to hand management of the State Lottery to British firm Camelot. Please click this link to sign up for updates.

Privatizaton of the State Lottery is but one attack on working people coming from Corbett and the State GOP. The Harrisburg Patriot News reports that a coalition has formed in support of a renewed effort to privatize the State's Liquor Stores, and an effort to pass so-called "Right To Work" legislation is underway.

All of these plans will probably be topics of discussion at the Biennial Legislative Conference, to be held the 11-12 of February at the Hilton Harrisburg. The registration fee is $75 and includes a legislative reception on the 11, and a legislative breakfast and breakout sessions on the 12. Registration forms are available through the State AFL-CIO.
