This week, there are a few “special tastings,” and “special sales weekends,” look over the entire list. Mostly reds… yes, usually mostly reds, but there is one chardonnay tasting, and priced well too.
Being short this week so right to the videos
Hmm, an Arizona Wine Spectator winner…. Aw will ya just take it in and learn? No snobs here. Oh, okay EEOC says we have to allow snobs…. Sorry… Well, from sunny Arizona to California for return to Paso Robles... a returning favorite. And lastly, to provide some useful information, let’s turn BOOT CAMP!
It’s a big, three day weekend, so visit some tastings Friday, how about taking in an urban winery on Saturday, have lunch on their deck. There are so many options, right in Portland, that if you are not traveling, do an at home Vino vacation!
Now onto this weeks offerings, and remember, Oregonians taste wine safely; bring your friends!

FRIDAY SIPS - "BRUNELLO & ANYTHING GOES"
For those who are sticking around, drop by today to taste the exalted Brunello di Montalcino listed below along with anything else that might be uncorked.
Today, August 30 from 3:00-5:45 PM (note the special hours for this week's tasting).
2007 COL D'ORCIA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
ABSURD SPECIAL PRICE - $39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE
”Still some available and we're gonna open it for tasting today, Friday August 30 from 3:00 – 5:45!! Located south of the town of Montalcino in the hamlet of Sant' Angelo in Colle, Col D'Orcia has been an important and well-run Montalcino property for almost 40 years and is consistently regarded as one of the region's prolific producers on all levels. For vintage 2007, this stalwart estate made a mighty-fine Brunello, then again, what else would be expected from such a producer and in a magnificent vintage.
”Col D'Orcia's 2007 is a textbook Brunello and a joy to smell and taste!! Full-bodied, packed with milk chocolate, violet and black cherry along with plenty of structure and power along with an underbelly of the great tangy sage earth notes of Southern Tuscany, specifically on the mouth-coating, drawn-out finish. While you wouldn't exactly be a barbarian if you uncorked one now, this wine will really sing from 2015 onward. If you've always wanted to be like us and say that your favorite Chianti is Brunello, then try this because rest assured, it ain't gonna be 40 bucks again!”

“Let’s look forward to the remarkable deliciousness that awaits you tomorrow as we explore once again the lesser known wine paths of Italy. As I’ve stated before when you veer away from the well trodden trails through Tuscany and the Piedmont you find wines that are equally compelling and food friendly, but at lower price points due to their lower profile. Which is my way of saying both satisfaction and opportunity awaits. The Veneto, Friuli, Trentino, Lombardia, and Emilia-Romagna are not destinations that come first when most people are asked about their Italian travel plans. But perhaps they should be, as I think tomorrow’s tasting will prove. This is a fine way to start your holiday weekend, and since we’ll be closed the following Friday it is your last VINO Friday Fix for the next two weeks. Consider yourselves warned, and tempted….”
-nv LINI Lambrusco Rosso “910″ (Emilia-Romagna) $15.95
-2009 VIGNALTA “Venda” Cab-Merlot (Veneto) $10.95
-2011 FATTORIA CABANON “Augurio” Oltrepo-Pavese (Lombardia)$15.95…a very cool, intriguing blend that is mostly croatina, with the addition of barbera, pinot noir, syrah, cabernet and merlot.
-2010 CANTINE NEGRAR Valpolicella Ripasso (Veneto) $17.95
-2009 INAMA Carmenere “Piu” (Veneto) $20.95…we’ve had this lovely, elegant wine in several Friday Flights over the years, and it never fails to be one of my favorites! 90 pts-Wine Spectator
And then we delve further afield for the grand vistas in the land of bonus pleasures…
Bonus #1-2010 FORADORI Teroldego (Trentino) $25.95…made by the independent minded and über talented Elisabetta Foradori, who basically told the governing wine board “FU, I’m making wines the way I want to and you can keep your useless appellation designation off my bottles.” An attitude I can only applaud.
Bonus #2-2010 RUSSIZ SUPERIORE Cabernet Franc “Collio” (Friuli)$27.95…it come into our market in minuscule quantities and is worth every penny asked.
Bonus #3-2008 VAONA Amarone “Pegrandi” (Veneto) $49.95…world class, and simply superb Amarone here. The recipient of the coveted “Tres Bicchiere” rating from Italy’s prestigious Gambero Rosso Guide, and a rather stunning, and relatively well priced, Amarone!
Now I say this almost every week, but with these wines it bears even greater meaning, so please bring cheese and other snacks tomorrow. These wines will sing their clearest with some edible accompaniment, as that is the way their producers intended them to be enjoyed. The tasting begins at 4:30 and runs right through til 8:00. With fingers crossed we’ll have the back patio open for what looks like one of the last times (boo!). So drop by anytime with ten dollars for the first five, and a bit more for the bonus love, and I can’t wait to see you all here!
