Only in Broward County, and only this Labor Day weekend, will residents find such diverse events as a tattoo art exhibit and a Nascar racing contest, all on the same weekend. From Hollywood to Davie, eclectic choices abound.
Bear and Bird Boutique and Gallery is hosting "Off the Needle", an exhibit featuring the art of South Florida tattoo artists. While not for the faint of heart (and not for the kids), the artists' work is detailed and unusually creative. Located upstairs from Tate's Comics, the unique boutique ignites the curiosity. After viewing the exhibit, a stroll through the comics-and-more store is joy itself for fans of the genre, with many unusual items for sale.

Those with a silly streak who don't mind a bit of a drive may prefer celebrating the return of Coconut Grove's Great Grove Bed Races on Sunday, which has changed sponsors and race route. With Helio Castroneves as Grand Marshal and a Pajama Pub Crawl beginning the night before at 7:00 pm (registration at Fat Tuesday's at 6:00 pm), this is one for the unabashedly uninhibited. The good news? The race itself is free.
Want to beat the South Florida heat? The Seminole Casino Hollywood is hosting its "Classic Chill Fest" from starting on Saturday with free ice skating and free concert by Vanilla Ice (concert starts at 8 pm). Sunday morning's festivities begin at 10:00 am with a car show and cash giveaway. For more information, visit their website by clicking here.

Not to be outdone, Mardi Gras Gaming and Casino is hosting their own hotdog eating contest. It’s too late to register as a contestant, but you can keep an eye on the proceedings while waiting your turn to test drive Rusty Wallace’s Nascar vehicle, which has been converted to a simulator. Drivers might even win Rookie of 2009 and a little cash to go with that title! Simulator contest runs Saturday 3 pm – 10 pm, Sunday 4 pm – 10 pm, and Monday 1 pm – 8 pm. Visit their website for more information.
As always, local police will be keeping a close eye on drivers for signs of intoxication. Drivers over the legal limit will be arrested, so utilize taxis, hotel rooms, or keep the alcohol consumption at home this weekend. Whatever the choice of weekend festivities, be safe!
