Only a short drive from Raleigh and 7 miles from Greensboro, Grove Winery and Vineyards offers a smorgasbord of experiences perfect for a Labor Day weekend day trip. On September 4th and 5th, Grove Winery hosts its 5th Annual Crafts in the Grove: An Old World Crafts and Grape Stomp Festival. Labor Day Swirlfest, a free concert by Bruce Piephoff, starts Monday afternoon.
Crafts in the Grove features free viewings of the work of over 20 artisans. Their crafts range from painting to leatherwork, ceramics to soap. Quilts, gourds, gemstones, handmade musical instruments...a little early Christmas shopping can be accomplished on this day trip!
The festival also includes door prizes, grape stomping, and grape testing. Wine and concessions are available, and picnics are allowed.
Swirlfest starts at 1pm on September 6th on the lake stage. Piephoff, a singer/songwriter/recording artist, performs here annually. Some artisans will remain for Swirlfest, which will also offer wine samples and concessions, including kid-friendly food.
Grove Winery and Vineyards is an excellent day trip destination from Raleigh any other day of the year as well. The 44-acre winery and estate vineyards is part of the Haw River Wine Trail and the Piedmont Heritage Wine Trail. The tasting room is open from noon to 6pm on Monday through Saturday and from 1pm to 6pm on Sunday.
