Labor Day recipe series, part 3: All-American apple pie

All-American Apple Pie

The Labor Day recipe series has now covered an appetizer and an entrée. It is now time to feature a dessert worthy of serving to friends and family members for the holiday. This apple pie is not only delicious but impressive. Served warm, chilled, or room temperature, this dessert will shine at your Labor Day bash.

All-American Apple Pie

• 1 box refrigerated pie crust for a 9 inch double crust pie
• 1/2 cup unsalted butter
• 3 tbs. all-purpose flour
• 1/4 cup water
• 1/2 cup white sugar
• 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
• 1 tsp. cinnamon
• 1 tsp. vanilla
• 8 apples (I used Macintosh, Granny Smith would work as well) - peeled, cored and sliced

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.
2. Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work of crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.
3. Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees. Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

    what kind of apples?

Sorry - I used Macintosh but you could also use Granny Smith

I used braeburn apples. They say those are the best for baking pies. I didn't find it easy pouring the butter and sugar mixture over the pie crust, perhaps mixing it in with the apples before placing the top of pie is more useful.
