Labor Day potluck: Slow Food Int'l supports healthy eating for kids

I

On Monday, May 7th, Labor Day, Slow Food International will sponsor a national day of action in support of healthy eating in schools.  As part of this national event, a potluck is being held at the Arboretum in Elysian Park.  All are invited.

Slow Food International is a member-sponsored organization that focuses on educating consumers on issues of the food industry; defending biodiversity; encouraging local and sustainable production through venues such as farmers' markets; and organizing events including meals, tastings, fairs, festivals, workshops, and conferences.

Founded in 1986, the name "Slow Food" was chosen to contrast with the "fast food" values often demonstrated by an industrial society.  Slow Food encourages a way of life that values quality over speed; process as well as product.

The current "Time for Lunch" action focuses on the vital issue of kids' nutrition via school lunch programs.  Specific policy changes requested by the platform include giving schools one more dollar per day for each child's lunch; establishing standards for foods sold at school; and funding grants for programs such as "Farm to School".  This program provides for schools to purchase local foods and teach about healthy eating.

The platform, available on Slow Foods' website (www.slowfood.com), calls these and similar actions "a down payment on health care reform."

To show your support for this platform, consider participating in the Pot Luck this coming Labor Day; bring a dish to share for 6 people.  The dish should be either something rich with family history, or made using ingredients grown in California.  Each individual should also bring their own re-usable plate, cutlery, and cup.  To RSVP, call 323-982-0052.

Volunteers are also needed for this event!  Call 323-982-0052 to be involved.  More information is also available at www.slowfoodusa.org/timeforlunch.
