Labor Day. Across the Commonwealth, from the Poconos to the Three Rivers, families will be flocking to the beaches and lakes for one last chance to catch some rays or take the boat for one last cruise. Others will be grilling hot dogs and burgers while they try to capture a few more hours of what they see as a rapidly escaping outdoor season.

But, for Keystone State sportsmen, Labor Day is a true sportsmen holiday. The starts of the fall hunting season and filled with opportunities for everyone. Whether you wish to spend your day afield or afloat there are chances aplenty for your wishes to be granted.

Doves

The traditional opening day of doves will once again occur on Monday Sept 1st and this first season will run until Nov 15th. With a daily limit of 15 birds you could easily fill the grill for a late day Bar-B-Q. Dove hunters are reminded that although a Federal Duck Stamp is not required, a Migratory Game Bird License (HIP) is needed in addition to their annual PA Hunting License.

Canadian Geese

The September Canada Goose season, commonly referred to as the Resident Goose Season, also opens on Monday and continues through Sept. 25th. With liberal bag limits of 8 per day ( except in Southern James Bay population Zone where there is a reduced limits of 3 per day), hunters will be able to fill the freezer early.

$1 Fishing Licenses

The final holiday gift for sportsmen is also the newest opportunity. The PA Fish & Boat Commission has decided to take advantage of the recently granted authority to offer reduced cost licenses by lower the price for a 1-day license to $1 on Labor Day only. This is an excellent opportunity for lapsed anglers to get out and enjoy the sport again, or for experienced anglers to take a friend or family member, at a saving of between 70 - 90 %.

So, while everyone else is crowded around the grill why not head out to the wide open and enjoy some of Mother Nature's holiday gifts!
