Labor Day driving under influence campaign: "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest!"

Law enforcement agencies are taking full advantage of a grant from the Highway Safety Commission to keep drunk drivers off the roads this Labor Day Weekend.  “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” is the name of the campaign that law enforcement agencies will be working through the Labor Day weekend to catch drunk drivers.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Louisiana will be increasing patrols to catch drunk drivers before accidents happen.  Many serious injuries and deaths have occurred in the past doe to drunk driving.

Last year four deaths and 55 injuries happened in Louisiana over the Labor Day weekend that were alcohol related.  Statistics in 2007 claimed the lives of 16 people and 99 injuries that resulted from drunk driving.

Extra deputies will be on duty patrolling state highways and also have several check point stations to check for driving under the influence of alcohol.

New laws passed in the Louisiana Legislature went into effect on August 15, 2009 that provide for stiffer penalties for those convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol.  If you are caught driving under the influence with a suspended drivers license, you will be spending 15 days in jail.  Refusing to take a blood-alcohol test can result in a suspended drivers license for one year.

Drive safe.  Don't drink and drive--or you may find yourself "under arrest" this holiday weekend.

this seems to be one of the hardest things to do, knowing when to say when so you can drive because what is legally over the limit and what is impaired is different for different people.
