Labor Day crafts and recipes

The Labor Day weekend will give working families time to be together. If your family is staying home for the Labor Day weekend, plan to make some special dishes, and let the children help. Set aside time to relax as a family and work on crafts. Making crafts together is an opportunity to talk, laugh, and create.

Labor Day Crafts

Use an empty paper towel roll and scraps to make a 3-D pet, or use playdough to make a bird’s nest.

Make Pastel Monthly Calendars to display summer pictures.

Whip up some craft dough and create flags, people, and animals, whatever. Craft dough is easily molded and fun to play with.

Use finger paints and make a Happy Labor Day banner. Use 8.5x11 printer paper. Decorate with handprints and draw American flags, construction workers, nurses, teachers and other familiar workers. Tape the drawings to string, and put in a doorway, or as a border in the family room.

Fold paper into fourths. Cut out paper doll shapes of boys and girls. Color them as any worker you want. Tape them up as borders on the walls, or around the dinner table.

Let the kids help cook

American Flag Labor Day cake

Labor Day Pancakes – top these pancakes with apples, jelly, maple syrup, or blueberries.

Soften two cartons of cream cheese. In a large bowl, mix the cream cheese with ketchup, some chopped onions, and a chili powder to taste. Let the kids mix it with a meat mallet or potato masher. This is a good dip for pretzels and corn chips. Serve this while you are making crafts.

Make cinnamon biscuits. Use canned biscuits. Melt butter in a bowl. Mix sugar and cinnamon in another bowl. Dip the biscuits in the melted butter, then in the sugar mixture. Back as directed on package. The sugar mixture will form a caramelized coating on the biscuits.

Labor Day is a day to honor the working people of the nation. Don’t work too hard on your Labor Day crafts and food. Use their preparation as a time to have fun with your family.
