Labor Day is observed on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014 this year. One of 10 federal holidays, Labor Day generally has many Americans asking, "Are banks open or closed on Labor Day?" Labor Day always falls on the first Monday in September and is usually considered as the unofficial end to the summer season.

While many businesses and stores are open Labor Day, most banks are unfortunately closed. TD Bank will not be open on Labor Day, Sept. 1, 2014. TD Bank stores are one of the few banks that stay open on certain federal holidays throughout the year. However, TD Bank announced on its website that they will be closed this year for the Labor Day holiday. According to The Epoch Times on Monday, Sept. 1,

"Wells Fargo, Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, TD Bank, and most credit unions are closed. However, some 1st National Bank, Landmark Credit Union, Metro Bank, and US Bank locations have limited hours."

Which Banks are Open Labor Day?

Surprisingly, Washington Trust's McQuade's supermarket branch locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in certain locations. Local ATM machines are almost always open unless they're inside a bank lobby. "With the exception of Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, Washington Trust's McQuade's supermarket branch locations will be open from 10 AM until 2 PM on all bank holidays," reports Washington Trust Bank.

Which Banks are Closed Labor Day?

Locally, the following banks observe Labor Day, and their lobby and drive-up windows are closed as well. Webster Bank's holiday schedule shows that their banks are not open on Labor Day. Citizens Bank holiday schedule shows that their bank branches are closed on Labor Day. Washington Trust's Bank Holiday Schedule shows that with the exception of McQuade's supermarket branch locations, the rest of their banks will be closed on Labor Day.

Santander Bank offices will be closed to observe the 2014 Labor Day holiday. Coastway Credit Union observes Labor Day on Monday, September 1, 2014. Greenwood Credit Union's holiday schedule reports the bank is closed on Labor Day. Bank of America offices and banking centers will be closed in observance of Labor Day.

Local ATM machines are almost always open unless they're inside a bank lobby, supermarket or convenience store that is also closed for Labor Day. Call first to be sure. Banks that are closed on Labor Day will reopen for normal business on Tuesday, Sept. 2. NOTE: All transactions made on Sept. 1 will be processed the next business day (with exceptions).

U.S. Post Office is Closed on Labor Day 2014

Saving Advice on Aug. 30 reported that Labor Day is also a USPS post office holiday. That means except for Express Mail, there will be no mail delivery on Labor Day to your residence or business, and your local post office lobby will be closed as well. Regular business hours will resume Tuesday, Sept. 2.
