La Vernia plans candlelight vigil for 16-year-old student struck by car

The community of La Vernia, about 30 minutes southeast of San Antonio, is grieving over the loss of a 16-year-old student from the high school after she struck by a car while waiting for her school bus Friday morning.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Saturday night at La Vernia High School band hall at 6:30 p.m. for Linda Vela, a National Honor Society student, who was killed around 6:30 a.m. near her home on FM 1346, walking to wait on the bus.

Residents say that the Vela family has forgiven the driver, Gregory Rodriguez, 33, of St. Hedwig, Texas, who accidently struck her with a Ford Crown Victoria.

Vela’s brother, who was with her, said his sister had tried to step around a water puddle near the Wilson-Bexar County lines close to the intersection of the highway and County Road 357.

As the news spread across the city, students arrived to school, hearing rumors that one of their classmates was in grave condition. By noon, students learned Vela, who played trumpet in the band, had died.
