Los Angeles – For the time since 2000, the Los Angeles Opera presents Gioachino Rossini’s Cinderella (La Cenerentola), a romantic comedy based on the classic fairy tale opening March 23, 2013 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

In this operatic adaptation of the familiar fairy tale, Cinderella is a kindhearted girl who dreams of escaping the tyranny of her vain stepsisters by taking control of her own destiny.

Rossini's warmhearted retelling of the Cinderella story by the LA Opera is brought to life by the dazzling vocal fireworks of an exciting young cast, including American mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey performing as Cinderella on March 23, 28 and 31 and Georgian mezzo-soprano Ketevan Kemoklidze making her LA Opera debut as Cinderella on April 3, 7 and 13. American tenor René Barbera, the winner of Operalia 2011, makes his LA Opera debut as Prince Ramiro.

The cast also includes three Italian singers making their Company debuts: baritone Alessandro Corbelli as Don Magnifico, Cinderella's stepfather; baritone Vito Priante as the prince's valet Dandini; and bass Nicola Ulivieri as the prince's tutor Alidoro. Soprano Stacey and mezzosoprano Ronnita Nicole Miller (Woglinde/Forest Bird in Ring cycle, 2009-2010) return as Cinderella’s stepsisters, Clorinda and Tisbe.

Cinderella is conducted by James Conlon, who recently renewed his contract as LA Opera Music Director through 2018. The production, which has already delighted audiences in Houston, Cardiff, Barcelona, Geneva, Brussels, Toronto, Seville and Seattle, was created by the Spanish director Joan Font. Font is the founder of Els Comediants, an innovative Catalonia-based artists’ collective that has created more than 30 stage productions around the world. His creative team includes scenery and costume designer Joan Guillén, lighting designer Albert Faura and choreographer Xevi Dorca. LA Opera’s Resident Conductor, Grant Gershon, will serve as chorus director.

“I think that Los Angeles audiences of all ages will fall in love with our production of Cinderella,” says Plácido Domingo, LA Opera General Director. “Music Director James Conlon, and Stage Director Joan Font and his team have created a dazzling presentation, new to Los Angeles, that is bursting with color and comedy.”
