Every showcase isn't complete without a lineup of star performers and the June showcase packed plenty of punch with great performances from 7 outstanding bands and performers. The first 3 performances at the Whisky a Go Go came courtesy of Justin Lanning, The Next Day, and Nik Kai.
Lanning's positive power-pop performance was full of layered guitars and effects that made the one-man show sound like a full band. The California native's infectious optimism exuded through his music and lyrics.
The Next Day is a band of five teens that combined elements of classic hard rock and edgy metal guitar riffs and solos. Hailing all the way from San Antonio, this band of youngsters shredded some serious tunes to an audience where some were more than two to three times their age.
But the most surprising performance of the night that had the crowd cheering in amazement came from the 10 year-old guitar prodigy, Nik Kai. The self-taught phenom laid down some totally crazy solos on a guitar that looked almost as tall as he is. Kai is already making history as the youngest nominee in the 21 year history of the LA Music Awards.
