Wear a name like Craig MacDonald and one would expect you’d like Guinness, hail from Dublin, and have at least one friend name of Phineas. Perhaps there is a Craig MacDonald who doesn’t love a stout beer but our MacDonald, from San Diego loves all things Irish especially pubs.
After a trip to Ireland back in the stone age, MacDonald brought the entire Pub to San Diego and in 1999, he opened Hooley’s Irish Pub and Grill http://www.hooleys.com. The other day Nancy and I passed over the threshold of the Hooley’s at Grossmont Center, located at 5500 Grossmont Center Dr. #277 La Mesa across from Fuddruckers and next to Sports Authority.
We’ve been to Hooley’s before, but the other day me Mudder told me to try out Hoolely’s Ruben because it’s the best ever. So we did. Mom’s know best about such things and indeed they make a really good Ruben at Hooley’s and we went with the ½ Ruben with fries which filled me to the top and was very reasonably priced. Nancy did the same and we both left after a few pints quite happy with lunch at the pub.
I nearly always enjoy the atmosphere in a pub and Hooley’s does a good job bringing us the feeling of a good Irish Pub. Just as Disney is to Main Street, Hooley’s is to Dublin what we all imagine a good pub should be.
They do offer up all the sports views needed for my capacity to enjoy sports. On the day we were in, we could watch my Padres, three different soccer matches and there was a tennis match bouncing along in the far reaches of the bar.
The menu is extensive offering the likes of Irish fare fairly complete to satisfy most European tastes, for those longing for an Irish taste. They also offer a simple menu of sandwiches and burgers with sides which favor the Irish State as well. They offer specials every day of the week and overall I’ve tried at least ½ of this pub’s offerings with a pleasure which draws me back for one more time in this pub.
