Way back when... I used to hitch to La Jolla Shores every day of each summer to enjoy San Diego’s idyllic climate, beaches, and in general beauty extraordinaire. Often I went with my pal Phineas P Gage and we’d spend hour after hour body surfing at the shores, or jumping off the clam and sometimes we’d swim from the caves to the shore. Not yet 16 with car, we would start at San Diego State College, catching a ride to Mission Blvd and head north to La Jolla Blvd continuing north to Pearl, then it was a matter of, do we jump off the clam or head to the Shore for a day of surf. What a life!
Just the other day, Nancy and I retraced my youthful tracks and in contrast to my “back in the day” incantations, it is nothing short of miraculous how things have changed! It feels as though a majority of buildings have been razed to give way to the super rich with enough borrowing power to rebuild my La Jolla with a more modern, mind blowing regeneration of awesome property for sure.
We looked about for a bite to eat, and Nancy was in the mood for BBQ, which is rare but does happen occasionally. Head to the children’s pool but stop by 888 Prospect for some of the best in BBQ from Bubba’s Smokehouse BBQ, lunch and dinner served every day of the week starting at 11:00 a.m. http://www.bubbassmokehousebbq.com and it is good!
Here’s the thing: there were eight of us consumers so I was able to taste a lot of food without buying it all but all of it was extremely good to eat! We ate baby backs; I ordered 1 beef rib just for the taste; we tasted the brisket; pulled pork and pulled chicken; I even tried their burgers and a bite of their hot dog from my little buddies that came with the group. The menu offers a lot of choices with plenty of sides to choose from. I had coleslaw and BBQ beans with my meal.
What I liked best about Bubba’s meats was it was smoked and the smoked flavor came through with every piece of meat we ordered. I also like that the sauces are available for self service. The sides were good enough, but I have had better salad.
The service was excellent and friendly. We were all made to feel comfortable and welcomed in perfect southern hospitality style. The price while not cheap wasn’t over burdening to the wallets. I’d definitely like to go back for another bite at Bubba’s.
