If you are searching for more theatrical way to experience chamber music, check out the LA Grand Ensemble. Their concerts include set design, costumes, choreography, dancers and opera singers. Most of these talented artists regularly work or perform with the LA Opera, LA Philharmonic and the Colburn School of Music. These prestigious institutions are located on Grand Ave, downtown Los Angeles, hence the name of the ensemble.
This week they are putting on their new production of early 20th century chamber music masterpieces, called: 1913: Shaping Modernism. There will be only two performances, on Dec. 19th and 20th, at 8 p.m.
The concert focuses on the year of 1913, which brought many new creative artists and energies to the ballet and the concert hall. One of these was the Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky, whose explosive "Rite of Spring" for a provocative ballet with daring choreography by the visionary Diaghilev, set the artistic world on fire.
The crucial year of 1913 was also the birth year of British composer, Benjamin Britten born on Nov. 22, 1913. As part of the many ensembles participating in the 100th anniversary of the composer's birthday, the LA Grand Ensemble has included a work by Britten on their program
The program of 1913: Shaping Modernism will bring theatrical and visual values to enhance the chamber works of Satie, Schoenberg and Britten. On the program will also be original adaptations of Manuel De Falla’s La Vide Breve and Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, featuring their resident vocalist, international young opera star, soprano Amanda Squitiera.
This luminous voiced and glamorous artist performed in Los Angeles a few seasons ago in the LA Opera's new production of "Il Postino" staring Placido Domingo. This spring Squitiera will return to sing the role of Stella in the LA Opera's new production of Street Car Named Desire.
