It was a tough match to watch for Los Angeles Galaxy fans as its Western Conference rivals Real Salt Lake defeated the four-time MLS cup winner with a score of 1-0. Season openers are hoped to be won by the home club, but this is not what happened on Mar. 8 at the StubHub Center. The visiting fans were the ones cheering as Galaxy fans went home with heavy hearts.
Although Galaxy has more shots on target it was not able to hit the net. RSL's Nick Rimando was able to keep goals at bay and showed excellent skill in the night's match. It was shocking and upsetting to Galaxy forwards like Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane. It was even more upsetting when Galaxy newcomer Rob Friend earned a penalty kick, which was given to Keane; he took a poor shot which Rimando blocked with ease. Rimando gave an amazing all-around performance last night.
The lone goal scorer of the match was Ecuadorian Joao Plata who scored in 80th minute. He was assisted by Kyle Beckerman who was able to sneak the ball past Galaxy defender -- and Designated Player -- Omar Gonzalez -- and Plata made the goal against Panamanian goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. Penedo has a handful of great saves in the match, but he sadly could not block the winning shot.
Be sure to watch Galaxy's next match on Mar. 12 against Club Tijuana at the Stubhub Center in Carson, Ca.
