After a tough defense showdown between both clubs in the first half, Keane decided it was time to make something happen in the second half. In the 66th minute Keane scored on a magnificent pass from Landon Donovan for the 1-0 lead. The defensive effort of Wardy Alfaro was not enough as the ball rolled off the hands of goalkeeper.
Cartagines Paolo Cardozo could not connect on goal with an open shot in the 72nd minute in an attempt to tie the game.
Keane was far from done when he scored another goal in the 3 minutes of stoppage time on another key assist from Donovan for the 2-0 shutout.
You see the difference when Landon came on," said Keane. "We're very in tune with each other. We know each other's runs and where we want to be, so it was the case with the two goals, and lucky enough for us we got the two goals. It was a decent performance. It wasn't brilliant, but it was decent."
Keane was recently named MLS Player of the Week after his superb performance against Real Salt Lake where he scored his second career hat trick.
"Our team played very well tonight. Against a good opponent," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.
Robbie Rogers strained his left hamstring while changing a ball in the first left the game just before halftime.
The Galaxy won't play until September 18th in the regional championship. The Galaxy return to MLS action on Saturday night as they face Vancouver FC on the road.
Keane and Donovan continue to be the best duo in the MLS.
