LA Galaxy ad in Seattle Times pushes me to cheer for RSL

Well, I waited all week to decide whom to cheer for in Sunday's MLS Cup Final. Thanks to this heartfelt, professionally done ad in today's Seattle Times, that takes up nearly 1/3 of a page...I can officially say I am behind the boys from...SALT LAKE.

After reading that tripe, I think most of us need a bit of mouthwash, or perhaps even a good hot shower. Look at those LA suck-ups surrounding their letter with Sounders fans holding up Seattle scarves, and then having the nerve to put their own crest at the top. (Notice the "Presented by Herbalife" slogan, too.)

Herbalife? How about get a life!

Stuff it LA. We have bought into MLS and our Sounders, but you shouldn't have bought space in our hometown paper for such a patronizing "letter." We don't need a 'pep talk' from a bunch of California wannabee hipsters. We feel just fine thank you about our club, and we don't like you.

So there.

GO RSL!

FYI, this league ad also appeared in Friday's Seattle Times.

Really? This is not a fake? Shrug. I hate LA.

  • BW 2 years ago

Hmm.. If the Sounders had lost to LA in the conference final, I would have agreed with you. But.. I don't really see the big deal. They were impressed with what the Sounders did this season and they'd like our fans to cheer for them in the Cup. Maybe the sentiment is authentic.. maybe not. Big deal. Next year they'll become opponents again. In the meantime, pick a team for their abilities on the field, not what they put in a newspaper.

Back in 2003, Virgin Atlantic issued a full-page ad in (I believe) the Wall Street Journal. It was a salute and farewell to Concorde, which was operated in competition by their arch-nemesis. I doubt anyone refused to fly Virgin after seeing that 'tripe'.

don't see the big deal, they acknowledged Seattle fans rock... and now they want a piece. Seems like a huge compliment to me

BW, that isn't rain and wind you are hearing right now...it is a giant suck-up noise coming from CA. Who cares if LA compliments us? What does that even mean? Sincerity from that club is pretty worthless. Asking for us to make them "Our second favorite MLS club for one day" is creepy. Creepy.

  • David Falk 2 years ago

rb: compliments from LA? Who asked for them? Who needs them? Becks and Donovan? Bruce Arena? Gosh...I hope they really like us. LOL.

  • laurie 2 years ago

As I've said before, I'd be a whole lot more likely to support LA if douchebags like Berhalter and Magee hadn't gone out of their way to get Riley red carded on Mother's Day.

Oh, and there was that little Beckham being "committed" to MLS thing.

    Speaking of douchebags.

  • BW 2 years ago

No, we don't need compliments.. but I'm not sure what's wrong with getting them.

If Barca or Chelsea put a complimentary ad in our paper, it'd be hanging up on everyone's wall. Compliments from Europe? Who needs them? Messi and Ballack? LOL

Now, again, I wouldn't say this about every team and every situation. If Chivas or Houston had such an ad after trying to make every Sounders player eligible for handicap parking, then, again, I'd agree with you.

At least it wasn't signed by Tom Cruise. Or Simon Fuller.

What's the big deal about this? Relax everybody. Sheesh.

Nobody from washington ever roots for anything from LA. Oregon's sports history has been crap for almost all of history so all of our angst is directed towards the people in the land of perpetual sun.

Really, that much melanin and dopamine inducing sun can't be good for one's health.

  • A 2 years ago

Why would a Sounders supporter get behind either one of the teams. I thought this post was going to be about how ridiculous it is to suggest that, but then you go on to pledge allegiance to RSL. Fail.

  • David Falk 2 years ago

A: I like to have a rooting interest. Makes the match more fun. "Pledge allegiance to RSL?" LOL. No. But seriously, LA? Bigger NO.

  • Sam 2 years ago

Not that I agree with this ad or like LA at all, but the league is certainly in trouble if Salt Lake wins this match. They backslid into the playoffs and strung together a few wins to get to the final.

It says a lot about a league if a team with a losing record goes on to win the league cup only 4 matches later (and spare me the 'importance of the supporter's shield' argument; casual fans/media don't recognize it).

From an MLS/Soccer in the US perspective, you bet I'm hoping LA comes away with the title.

  • Soundersfan 2 years ago

I am glad that David is taking a position on this. Political correctness is boring, Seattle.
As for the ad, I am mystified as to why LA would run such a thing.

  • LOL 'supporters' 2 years ago

I laugh at the self-proclaimed Sounders supporters who say they won't cheer for 'anyone except the Sounders.' LOL. You are so much better than the rest of us...

  • Utahn 2 years ago

While RSL quietly goes about getting ready for the Cup, and enjoying the city of Seattle...LA is buying ads and paying to have Beckham's hairdresser flown up. We won't plead for your support Sounders fans. We are not LA.

  • Leo 2 years ago

Maybe LA should hand out cash to Sounders fans at the Qwest Field gates, too.

  • A 2 years ago

To "LOL 'supporters'". What other type of supporter is there than "self-proclaimed"? You really think supporters should ask somebody else if they are supporters or not?

Not cheering for anybody else is not about "being better" than anybody else. It is just how supporters are. Cheering for another team in the same league sounds very weird to me.

Seriously, your comment reeks of insecurity and of an inferiority complex.

  • LOL Supporters 2 years ago

A: It's the FINAL. Staying neutral isn't necessarily a 'sign' of loving the Sounders. It might be a sign of 'not having as much fun,' though.

  • DadRyan 2 years ago

You guys are priceless. LA Galaxy just handed a bunch of cash to your local news paper. Would you rather the team and visiting supporters come to town and have packed their own lunch? They are stimulating your economy, get over yourselves. I don't see how it's sucking up, they are offering you guys congratulations and respect. Seems pretty professional and if anything, flattering.

I still don't get why you guys are the only club allowed to advertise or market anything, yet everyone else is "sucking up" or "selling out" or "pandering" when they do it. A side effect of success is people outside of Seattle appreciating what you folks have going on. Acting like stuck up, crybabies is going to turn those people away.

It never gets old reading about how everyone except Riley is responsible for his red cards. The dude is a lousy hack. Please take off the Rave Green shades for a minute.

  • David 2 years ago

What's the big deal about this? Relax everybody. Sheesh.

  • laurie 2 years ago

Soundersfan, I agree completely. What's really funny is that they would think something like this would work in an iconoclastic and independent-minded city like Seattle.

  • abc 2 years ago

    ridiculous

  • NSBill 2 years ago

Yeah, it's kind of silly of them to buy this ad. But as another says, it's a nice compliment to us. But anyone that is swayed (in either direction) by this is equally silly. Geez, who the F cares? Instead of cheering for RSL or LAG, cheer for good play. Cheer for both teams when they make good plays. 'Nuf said.

  • MP 2 years ago

Ohhhh... you sound like a big nerd. I'm sure you're not a big nerd. But you sound like a big nerd.

  • The Truth 2 years ago

Falk is right! LA is clueless! Enough Said!

  • K 2 years ago

I don't mind the ad. It sounds nice, and yes, they are trying to give a compliment. Our Sounders are doing a great job of bringing the MLS to WA. And look at all the growth that is taking place within the youth programs! No, it's not all because of the Sounders coming to WA, but it's definitely helping! There is not enough field space for all of the youth teams to practice! This sport is becoming infectious in our state, and I think the LAG recognize that. It's a good thing! I don't believe they're trying to be insulting, just recognizing the success we have accomplished. There is nothing wrong with that. :)

What, No apology from Magee for attacking Riley then falling on the ground like he got shot?

  • Mat 2 years ago

Talk about overblown. I thought it was classy.

  • Sugar Shack 2 years ago

    Dear Galaxy,

Thanks for coming to Seattle. And for underperforming again. Priceless.

    With (no) respect,

    Sugar Shack

When I saw that ad for the first time, my immediate thought was...

    Throwing pearls before swine.
