Was it good chemistry that proved to be the winning formula in the Los Angeles X’s quarterfinal-match victory over the BROOKLYN STyLES?
Chemistry is difficult to measure, but in any event the X advanced to the Professional Bowlers Assn. League’s semifinal.
The match, which took place at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., was shown tape-delayed Sunday on ESPN.
Last season, the X barely failed to advance to the four-team Elias Cup finals, which determined the league champion.
For the league’s second season, the X shuffled the deck and added Mika Koivuniemi at No. 2 and E.J. Tackett at No. 5.
The X maintained its solid nucleus of franchise player Jason Belmonte and Parker Bohn III (No. 3) and Andres Gomez (No. 4).
Interestingly, it was Belmonte and Bohn who made the key shots as the X defeated the STyLES in the decisive Baker team match. The X won the Baker team match, 237-215, as Belmonte rolled strikes on his two shots.
Bohn, the anchor, threw a strike in the fifth frame and then sewed up the match with a strike in the 10th frame (followed by another strike and a nine count).
Tackett, the PBA 2012-2013 rookie of the year, enjoyed a solid performance in his first competition in the PBA League.
Koivuniemi, who bowled at No. 2 last season for the Philadelphia Hitmen, had some erratic moments, but it didn’t seem to matter.
The X, at least for this match, appeared to have too much chemistry.
