It’s no wonder that one of the priciest cities to live in has a franchise that is bidding above $1B which is pricey even for MLB standards. During first round bidding billionaire, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had to tap out; he thought half-a-billion was enough. Then ole’ Peter O’Malley who used to own the dodgers decided he was going to come in as a white knight and perhaps give hope to the ailing franchise. That’s until he realized he may not even be awarded a contract if he had the highest bid according to a report cited in the Times. Though, it’s hard to imagine McCourt turning down a $2B bid if rumors were to materialize.
Unfortunately, O’Malley is packing and shipping out because he sees the current bid at too astronomical a price. Peter O’Malley and company had owned the Dodgers for 47 years before turning it over to Fox for $350M in ’97. Many hopefuls believed he could turn the team around as he did during his era. On the other hand, there are those who believe he’s too old to lead the team into the future.
Peter O’Malley was one of 11 prospects to buy the L.A. Dodgers. The rest of the bidders have to revise their submitted bids by week’s end.
