Planning on starting an exercise regimen in the new year? There’s no time like the present.

Don’t make a face! Getting in shape doesn’t have to feel like work. There are countless ways to break a sweat in Los Angeles that don’t involve a treadmill or a gym membership.

Let me give you a for-instance:

Twice a week, Dance It Off studio hosts an African aerobic dance class designed to help you “get young like Benjamin Button.” Participants—who gather Thursdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m.—are led through dance routines set to traditional African music as well as salsa, R&B and hip-hop. Ten minutes of “Abs Attack” training tops off each session.

You only pay $5 per class, which is cheap in a city where many classes run $15. There’s another really cool thing about this African dance fitness class: You can take the whole family, because the session caters to three levels. Level one is perfect for beginners ages 9 to 14 and beginning adults aged 50 and over.

Dance It Off is located at 12834 Victory Blvd. in North Hollywood.
