Kyrie Irving and Cavaliers stun Celtics in Boston 88-87 (video of Irving)

Boston, MA 1/29/2012- Cleveland Cavaliers (8-11) began a home and home stretch with the Boston Celtics (9-10) tonight. The Cavaliers came out strong battling the Celtics throughout the first half. The Cavaliers clung to a 1 point halftime lead 44-43. The Cavaliers were without Daniel Gibson who was out with a neck strain. The Celtics were without their star point guard Rajon Rondo who was inactive for tonight’s game.

Kyrie Irving was the star of the night for the second game in a row. Irving led all scorers with 23 points and 6 assists. The big play of the night came with time running out in the game. The Cavaliers were down 87-86 to the Celtics. Kyrie Irving drove to the lane in a play very similar to a game earlier in the season against the Pacers. Irving did not miss this time . Scoring in traffic to give the Cavaliers a 88-87 lead with 2.6 seconds to play. The Cavaliers were able to hold the Celtics as time expired giving the Cavs a stunning victory in the TD Garden. Anderson Varejao had a huge night for the Cavaliers as he scored 18 points and had 9 rebounds. Alonzo Gee also chipped in 14 points and 4 steals off the bench for the Cavaliers.

The Boston Celtics had a double digit lead in the 3rd quarter outscoring the Cavs 27-18 in the 3rd. The Celtics were led by Ray Allen with 22 points and 3 assists. The Celtics had 3 other players with double digit scoring. Paul Pierce had 18 points 5 assists and 6 rebounds. Kevin Garnett 14 points and 7 rebounds. Brandon Bass chipped in 13 points and 4 rebounds for the Celtics.

Tonight’s game had 20 different lead changes. 18,624 were in attendance at the TD Garden. The game also lasted 2:08.
