The LaneReport.com Dec. 30, 2013, reported that Kentucky won an award which will further assist the Kentucky Department of Education in providing no cost meals to children who qualify. The free meal program is managed by the Division of Sxhool and Community Nutrition.
The department reportedly scored a perfect 100% under the qualifying criteria. The USDA made the announcement and sponsored The Direct Certification Performance Award. Kentucky Department of Education Commisioner Terry Holliday was quoted as saying "This award means one of the most basic needs of Kentucky's School Children is being met."
The program focuses on direct certification by the department, of children eligible for the free meals.
There was no direct mention of any additional benefit of the program for special needs children. But having a commitment by the State to ensure children are feed, cannot help but improve the experience of children with physical and mental challenges.
