Four-time Bassmaster Classic champ Kevin VanDam came to the Sabine River Challenge scales with three fish, today. Although he didn’t have a limit KVD weighed in a big bass for 4-6, prompting Bassmaster Elite Series emcee to exclaim, “hydrilla gorilla”.
“The conditions are tough,” stated VanDam at his weigh-in interview. “The tide is pushing dirty water up.” KVD stated he didn’t get many bites in practice and was fortunate to have the three that he did. He expected the weights to improve as the week went on due to the anticipated warming weather.
Even with only three fish in the bag, the Elite Series pro from Kalamazoo, Mich. finished Day One with 8-2 for 19th place. It appeared that many found the fishery a struggle as only 17 of the 100 pros came to the scale with a full five-fish limit.
Dean Rojas from Lake Havasu City, Ariz. leads the event on Day One with 15-10. Rojas also reeled in the Carhartt Big Bass of the day at 5-15.
The 2013 Elite Series Sabine River Challenge presented by STARK Cultural Venues will continue tomorrow. Launch takes place at 7 a.m. CT and weigh-in begin at 3:15 p.m. CT.
