Mr. Kurt Metzger (click name to read bio) was the speaker at last nights Oak Park-Huntington Woods Democratic Club meeting. Other speakers included State Representative, Ellen Cogen Lipton, and James Johnson, the Economic Recovery Coordinator, who represents Congressman Sandy Levin's office.
If you read his bio, you will discover that the main speaker of the evening, Kurt Metzger is an expert in his field. In 2008 he was selected by the Skillman and Kresge foundations to develop and direct a new foundation-funded regional data indicators system, the Detroit Area Community Information System .
This meeting was very informative. Those who attended learned the reasons behind Detroit's loss of population and its current downward spiral. The facts were almost overwhelming; lack of employment opportunities, high property taxes, outrageous car insurance payments (sometimes more than the car note), the worst public transportation system in the United States.
I can't help but be amazed by Detroiter's high spirits and perseverance despite the gloomy state of affairs. There are currently a lot of hardships to survive, but Mr. Metzger ended his presentation with the strategies that may be put into place for Detroit's recovery.
I have featured an assortment of charts and graphs, from the presentation. Check out the slideshow and you will find that they clearly explain the factors behind Detroit's decline in population and economic resources.
