Former NASCAR Champion Kurt Busch has signed to drive for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) in 2014, joining current drivers Tony Stewart and Danica Patrick. News of the signing was first reported Monday morning by Fox Sports and confirmed by other news outlets after SHR had acknowledged earlier that an offer had been made to Busch..
Kevin Harvick will also join SHR next year to replace Ryan Newman after Newman’s contract was not renewed for 2014. SHR has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon to discuss the expansion from three to four drivers.
Busch currently drives for Furniture Row Racing, a single-car team based in Denver, where he still has a chance of making the championship field. After the Bristol race on Saturday night, Busch dropped to 12th in the standings but is only six points out of 10th with two races remaining before the field is set. The top-10 drivers in points and the next two with the most wins make the field.
“We’re down, but we’re not out,” said Busch in a team release about his championship chances after the Bristol race. “The end of the race we gained a bunch of points back with guys having trouble.”
