"Out with the old and in with the new." This is one phrase that now has more than one meaning! As the old year moves out, a new year comes in, but this year, it also brings with it a new zodiac sign - Ophiuchus.
Minnesota Professor and MnPS board member Parke Kunkle is able to give the world a heads up.
"It's written in the stars. Star signs were created some 2,000 years ago by tracking where the sun was in the sky each month. However, the moon's gravitational pull has slowly moved the Earth in its axis, creating about a one-month bump in the stars' alignment," says Kunkle.
Now, I'll answer some questions I've been getting so far:
- Is it true that the almanacs have been wrong?
Since I started gazing at the stars and moon last year, I noticed a significant error in many online and physical almanacs - each moon sign was one, sometimes two one sign off. So, I began to go strictly by the moon and SkyChart's sky maps, and I noticed that the moon was "taking a detour" as I called it. Since then, I've been telling everyone I could that it was time to look up at the stars instead of keeping their nose in the books; something was awfully off.
So, if you've been following astrology and feel like the moon or sun sign's description just doesn't match up with happenings on that particular day, this could be why. I, for one, will continue to watch the skies and draw my own, new conclusions to what happens when the moon really IS in the right sign; I think we all as astrologers should do the same.
- Does this mean that I'm no longer a Sagittarius? I can't remove this tattoo!
Don't worry. This doesn't change your way of life, nor does it unravel your very being. As explained in this article, the constellation Ophiuchus has always been there - it just wasn't in our exact Sun and Moon orbit around Earth. For instance, if you've always traveled on Interstate 49, and you always pass by a specific blue and yellow house, it becomes normal to you, until one day, the state decides to redirect Interstate 49 and you now pass by a red brick house as well as the previous blue and yellow. You're still the same person, driving on the same interstate, but it has simply been moved slightly.
- Well, who will it affect then?
This addition of Ophiuchus does alter the previous dates of the horoscope; however, since your zodiac sign is determined by the position of the stars on the day you were born, your sign will remain the same. Ophiuchus did not enter the celestial path until 2009, so only babies born from 2009 on will have a new set of zodiac signs! Your baby could, in fact, be an Ophiuchus!
This new news simply clears up any question points astrologers may have had when dealing with people who don't seem to fit their sign, or unexplained happenings during times when the moon should be in another sign. Finally, it straghtens out the error in pre-made almanacs. More on this in my next articles - What is Ophiucus, How Ophiucus was Found, New Zodiac Dates, and More Information on the New Zodiac Sign.
