Kumihimo is the art of the Japanese braid. It translates as braided cord. An ancient Japanese fiber technique that enables the creation of beautiful, aesthetic, and functional braiding through interlacing. Kumihimo braids are versatile and may be used in apparel design, accessories, jewelry making and sculpture.
This cord has been used historically by Samurai as a both a decorative and functional piece. It was used as lacing for their armour and the armour worn by their horses. Obijime is the name of the cord used to hold the obi in a kimono dress, also a kumihimo braid.
Different types of braids can be created such as flat, foursided, hollow...using cords of bamboo, silk, hemp, wool... Beads can be used for a more formal look, adding interest.
To create Kumihimo there are two platforms that can be used. There is the foam Kumihimo disk and a traditional wooden maradai. You may create your own unique braids by varying threads, cords, ribbons, textures, and adding beads. The foam disk is perfect for beginners. Complex braids can be created using up to 24 bobbins with the foam disk.
Think of using this technique as a belt for a sweater you just knit. Anywhere an icord is used for a more stylish outcome.
